“We can’t help everyone. But, everyone can help someone”

Ronald Reagan

President and CEO of AVENS, Daryl Dolynny, who is one of the new Notary Public had this to share, “My colleague and I decided that we needed to address this service by removing barriers of access and affordability. As a Notary Public, we are held to principles and standards of professional and ethical practice, with an obligation to screen for mental competence. Being in the business of dementia or early cognitive disability puts us in a unique situation to help our community perform the notarization need for both resident and their families.”

Sara Fullerton, CPA and Director of Finance also has become AVENS newest Notary Public on the team, “I became a Notary Public to support our seniors through a service offering. AVENS provides an exceptional experience for seniors already, and this value add is one more service intended to make lives easier for our seniors, their families, and visitors.”

We are very confident this new service offering will be well received by many.

If you would like to know more about this service and whether this would assist you or your family, please stop by to discuss this with either Sara or myself. We would be more than happy to help you.

AVENS Supports International Women’s Day (IWD)

International Women’s Day (March 8th) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality.

We at AVENS celebrate and support this day, as we have over 99 of our staff who are women from a total of 130. This gives us a useful opportunity to reinforce the fact that everyone has a role to play in forging and maintaining a more gender-balanced world.

Our world today expects inclusivity, and so here we are. AVENS is operating in a very exciting time in history, where the world now “expects” diversity, equity, and inclusion. The world now notices its absence and celebrates its presence.

Now in 2022, we must step up and be aware of the significant impact that bias has on women’s equality- both conscious and unconscious bias. We need to recognize it and call it out. We need to #BreakTheBias

Fire Drill 2022

On Thursday, March 10th, 2022, AVENS Senior Management, with the assistance of the OHS Committee, initiated a mock fire drill in the Avens Manor.

One may ask, why we need to do these drills, as for some, this creates a lot of anxiety and disrupts what was a normal day? That is a fair question.

OHS Committee Member, Renee Wiseman (far right in a high-vis safety vest) is monitoring the fire drill on March 10th, 2022, in Avens Cedar Cottage

Fire drills are not only a legal requirement for an employer (AVENS must perform legally under NWT Health and Safety Legislation at least one fire drill per year), they allow one to practice our evacuation plans, test our room check procedures and test out head count methods. In essence, AVENS performs multiple fire drills every year to always evaluate our continuous improvement with our emergency management plan. Although on this day, we had a few opportunities to improve upon, I was very impressed on how calm and structured everyone conducted themselves.

RCTL, Ashlie Forget, was first to respond and was Team Lead for this fire drill on March 10th, 2022, in Avens Manor. With a two-way radio in her hand, she is seen here checking all rooms and changing room markers as she vacates each resident room.

Through a proper review process with our OHS Committee, we will share with you, what we have learned from this fire drill. Through repeated practice, you will become more at ease for these fire drills, so that if the unspeakable may occur, AVENS is ready to react swiftly and safely for our residents, fellow colleagues, and visitors.
